The comprehensive dental exam is performed at your initial visit and at your check-up exams. Comprehensive dental exams include:
- Digital X-Rays
- Examination for tooth decay
- Examination of previous treatment & existing restorations
- Gum disease screening
- Intraoral Photos
- Oral cancer screening
After your comprehensive exam you may be advised with follow up treatment options for your mouth health. Educating our patients about the optimal procedures and materials available to them is part of our practice. We welcome questions or concerns about our recommended treatments. Some common recommendations are: fillings, bridges, mouth guards, night guards, root canal and sealants.
Fillings are the restoration of lost tooth structure with metal, porcelain, or resin materials. There are many different types of materials used for fillings. Dr. Porcelli will discuss the options and choose the right one for you. Rest assured that whichever material is the right choice for you it will be BPA free as part of our dedication to biological dentistry practices. We never use mercury amalgam fillings.
Bridges are a stationary (non-removable) dental prosthesis fixed to teeth, adjacent to a space. They are cemented or bonded to supporting teeth or implants to replace one or more missing teeth. There are many types of bridges and Dr. Porcelli and his team will be able to discuss with you what type is best for your case.
Mouth guards are a soft-fitted device that is worn over the teeth to protect them against impact or injury, mainly used to protect the teeth when playing sports.
A night guard is a removable device that fits over the upper and lower teeth and prevents wear and tear to the teeth caused by grinding of the teeth during sleep.
A root canal is necessary when a tooth is infected and can not heal on its own. Symptoms include constant pain, discomfort when biting and chewing and sensitivity to hot and cold.
Sealants are normally applied to children’s teeth when they get their first permanent teeth. It is a thin, clear or white resin substance that is applied to the biting surfaces of teeth to prevent decay. It’s common to have sealants applied to children’s teeth as they tend not to do a thorough job of brushing.
